Announcing AWAKENING: a one-day event hosted by Enough Pie to breathe new life into 1600 Meeting and usher in an era of arts-driven community collaboration for the upper peninsula.

The rooms and hallways of this 86-year-old sleeping giant will open for the first time in decades, allowing for creative reinterpretation during the 3-day window between cleanup and building renovation.

The space will belong to ARTISTS: dancers, painters, actors, sculptors, musicians, filmmakers, photographers, and everything in between — artists of any age, background, approach, and medium — teams or individuals — projects of any size or shape. And all participants will receive a stipend for their work.

But the challenge is this: you have the next 3 weeks to submit a proposal, creating a profound vision for this long-vacant space…without any dimensions or rules.

AWAKENING will happen one time and one time only. An event of this magnitude will never take place in 1600 Meeting again. This is, quite literally, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

So, artists: surprise us. Inspire us. Turn vacancy into vibrancy. Create and collaborate. Step outside of your comfort zone. This space is yours for the taking, should you be so bold. But whatever you do, wake up: because it’s time to start.

Rooms vary greatly in size: some are 15×20 with lots of natural light, others, 4×8 without any windows at all. Some rooms are connected in a maze-like structure: for example, one big room may lead to 3 smaller rooms. Nearly all rooms are connected. Unfortunately, due to preliminary construction, no building tours will be offered prior to submission date.
