UP-Start Grantee Spotlight: Germaine Jenkins of Fresh Future Farm

We are so excited to be working with grantee Germaine Jenkins, Community Garden Coordinator and owner of Urban Veggucation, for one of our very first Community Project Grants! The Chicora Place Community Garden Vista-gram will engage residents and volunteers on a monthly garden workday to create planters using found materials and take part in a community photography project to document the process. The photographs will then be mounted as a collage in the garden’s gazebo to serve as an educational tool for promoting the garden.

Founded in July 2011 on a once vacant lot, the Chicora Place Community Garden serves to engage residents, local businesses, and nonprofits in the creation of an attractive recreational space that grows healthy food and relationships. Since its inception, the garden has distributed over 1,000 pounds of produce, hosted at least 12 garden workdays and potlucks, and received a brand new playground in partnership with Select Health of SC, the AmeriHealth Caritas Partnership, Charleston Promise Neighborhood and the City of North Charleston.

EVENTS:
Garden Workday:
Saturday, May 10, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.: Join Germaine for an afternoon of mosaic pot work, photography and a BBQ lunch! Movie night beginning at dusk.
Saturday, May 31: Photos will be mounted in the gazebo with assistance by artist Jonell Jaime Logan
